The Freedom of Expression Association (İfade Özgürlüğü Derneği, İFÖD) reported on 8 October that at least 39 further X accounts had been blocked in Türkiye. Most have since been withheld from users in Türkiye by X.

The accounts have around 465,000 followers between them. Five have more than 10,000 followers and fifteen more than 1,000.

Among them are the writer, historian and journalist Dilek Zaptçıoğlu, the lawyer Lale Demirkazan, the journalist Ayça Yılmaz, Ayhan Dadaloğlu, who posts on the stock market and the economy, and Arşiv Saka, which posts news and commentary. Dadaloğlu’s account is the largest of the group, with 242,800 followers, followed by Arşiv Saka with 140,600 and Zaptçıoğlu with 24,400.

İFÖD records that Dadaloğlu’s account had already been blocked on 3 October, under its previous username. The same account was blocked again five days later under the new one.

This is the third such case in a week. On 2 October the replacement X username opened by T24 after its own account was blocked was itself blocked. On 5 October the new account of the journalist Alican Uludağ was blocked after his earlier one had been. The measure does not attach to a post, or to a handle. It attaches to the account holder, and it finds them again when they move.

İFÖD’s entry gives no issuing judgeship, no decision number and no legal provision for the 8 October orders.

The sequence it has recorded since the end of September runs: at least 147 accounts on 30 September; the EngelliWeb monitoring account on 1 October; at least 31 accounts on 3 October; the Sky News correspondent Alex Crawford and Alican Uludağ’s new account on 5 October, alongside a further wave that included İFÖD’s own account; the news agency Mezopotamya on 6 October; bianet and eight journalists on 7 October; and these 39 on 8 October.

Of the 1,270 accounts blocked in September, İFÖD found that 115 were covered by a court decision. For the other 1,155 the legal grounds are unknown. October is being recorded the same way.
