Case Summary
Amine Cansu Çelik, Deputy Mayor of Üsküdar and a Municipal Council Member, was arrested and sent to prison. Çelik was detained after voluntarily going to Vatan Police Headquarters to give a statement. She was questioned four days after her detention and was subsequently arrested. During a prison visit, her four-year-old daughter initially did not recognize her mother. Çelik began her political career in the Justice and Development Party (AK Party/AKP). However, she resigned from the AKP on 28 March 2022, citing concerns that the party had moved away from justice. She subsequently joined the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and was elected as a CHP Üsküdar Municipal Council Member in the local elections held on 31 March 2024. She was later appointed Deputy Mayor of Üsküdar. Her relatives are awaiting her release as soon as possible.
